In a feat of dramatic innovation, the theatrical group, Swapnodol, is set to stage their sixth performance of the production 'Macbeth,' a mime adaptation based on the famous tragedy by William Shakespeare. The show is scheduled to take place at the Experimental Theater of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on the evening of Wednesday, May 31, 2023.
Directed by Zahid Ripon and constructed in the traditional style of Bengali silent drama, 'Macbeth' is a significant outcome of thorough practical research. The story, well-known worldwide, charts the audacious general Macbeth's quest for power, including the murder of King Duncan, seizing control, a series of further brutalities, and eventually facing the same fate.
While there have been myriad adaptations of Shakespeare's works in theatre, cinema, and television around the globe, Swapnodol's 'Macbeth' stands unique as arguably the first full-scale mime or mimodrama presented on stage, all developed through hands-on research.
An impressive ensemble cast, including Juena, Hasan, Sumaiya, Nishak, Shishir, Shyamal, Zebu, Anindy, Ark, Masud, Ruhul, Sabbir, Hriday, Tushar, and Roki, contributes to the performance of 'Macbeth.'
Fozle Rabbi has designed the stage and lighting, while Hasanujjaman takes care of the choreography. The costume and props have been managed by Juena Shabnam, Hasanujjaman, and Sumaiya Shishir. Shakhawat Shyamal and Mizaul Islam Khan have crafted the musical ambiance of the production. Shakhawat Shyamal also takes up the responsibility of the production manager. Swapnodol's 'Macbeth' has been produced with a grant from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
As the curtain rises for the sixth time, the audience is once again invited to immerse themselves in the silent drama of power, ambition, and tragic fall that is 'Macbeth.
